agricola, johann defined in 1939 year

agricola, johann - Agricola, johann (1494-1568);
agricola, johann - German Protestant reformer, also known, from his birthplace Eisleben, as Magister Islebius. His original name was Schneider or Schnitter. Educated at Wittenberg, he became a disciple and colleague of Luther. But his teaching as to the relative positions of repentance and faith provoked a violent controversy with Luther, who pronounced it Antinomianism, apparently coining the word. In 1540 Agricola went to Berlin, where he became preacher and general superintendent at the court of Joachim II, elector of Brandenburg. He made the first collection of German proverbs.
