ahmed - Ahmed (1724-73)
ahmed - Ameer of Afghanistan 1747-73. The son of Sammaun, or Seman, Khan, chief of the Abdali tribe, he served in the bodyguard of Nadir Shah. When, in 1747, Nadir was assassinated, Ahrned was acclaimed ruler; he then changed the name of his tribe to Durrani and founded the dynasty of that name. His wealth, which included the Koh-i-nur diamond, and his military talents helped him to popularity, and he made extensive conquests. He captured Lahore in 1748, mastered the Punjab in 1751, conquered Kashmir, and sacked Delhi, but had to yield the Punjab to the Mahrattas and Sikhs.
