aikenhead, thomas - Scotsman hanged for blasphemy. Born in Edinburgh, the son of an apothecary, he was accused of expressing contempt for the Scriptures and theology generally. He recanted, but being tried under a statute declaring blaspheming of any Person of the Trinity punishable by death, was hanged at Edinburgh, Jan. 8, 1697, after declaring full adherence to the Christian faith.
