plastids - Small, variously shaped bodies in cytoplasm of plant cells (excluding bacteria, blue-green algae, fungi, slime-fungi), one to many per cell in different plants, containing pigments and/or reserve food materials. Develop from pro-plastids. Some contain pigments chlorophyll, carotenoids, some are centres of accumulation of starch, proteins, oils. Comprise colourless leuco-plasts and pigmented chromoplasts including chloroplasts.
